President-elect Donald Trump has asserted that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is eager for a ceasefire and seeks to make peace as the war with Russia continues.
In an interview with the New York Post, Trump discussed his recent conversation with Zelensky during a gathering of world leaders in France for the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral.
Trump’s Comments on Peace Efforts
Trump, 78, stated, “He wants to make peace. That’s new,” referring to Zelensky’s desire for a ceasefire.
He elaborated that Zelensky believes it is time for peace negotiations, especially considering the staggering loss of life in the conflict.
Trump remarked:
“He wants to have a ceasefire. He wants to make peace. We didn’t talk about the details. He thinks it’s time, and Putin should think it’s time because he’s lost — when you lose 700,000 people, it’s time. It’s not going to end until there’s a peace.”
The former president mentioned that he is “formulating a concept of how to end that ridiculous war.”
Interaction with World Leaders
During his visit to France, Trump also shared his impressions of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, describing her as a “real live wire.”
He noted their time together at the leaders’ reception, praising her energy and engagement.
Trump was seen engaging in a series of notable handshakes with French President Emmanuel Macron during the ceremonial events.
The two leaders exchanged firm handshakes that some observers described as “power moves,” reflecting their complex relationship.
Security Measures During the Visit
Upon arriving at Paris’s Orly Airport, Trump was accompanied by over 20 French government security agents alongside his Secret Service detail.
A special police van was also deployed to provide anti-drone protection for his convoy.
Social Media Buzz
The handshakes between Trump and Macron generated significant buzz on social media, with users commenting on their intensity and the history of such interactions between the two leaders.
One user quipped that Macron might need a hand massage after their vigorous exchanges.
In his conversation with the press, Trump characterized his handshake with Macron as “just a firm shake,” highlighting their mutual understanding.
Engagement with Other Leaders
Trump also had a warm interaction with First Lady Jill Biden during the Notre Dame event, which sparked speculation online about their rapport.
Sharing a screenshot of their meeting on Truth Social, Trump humorously captioned it: “A fragrance your enemies can’t resist,” while promoting his perfume brand.
He described his chat with Jill Biden as “very nice,” noting her kindness during their conversation.
Additionally, Trump met with Prince William, where he reportedly adopted a friendly demeanor, even offering compliments about William’s appearance.
Body language expert Judi James observed that Trump’s gestures suggested a parental approach toward the prince.
A Call for Peace
As Trump continues to navigate his role as president-elect, his comments regarding Ukraine signal an intention to pursue negotiations and seek an end to the ongoing conflict.
While both Trump and Zelensky express a desire for peace, the complexities of international relations and historical tensions will play a significant role in shaping future discussions between Ukraine and Russia.
