A woman has tragically drowned at Shelly Beach in Margate, while a search operation is underway for a man who remains missing after swimming in the area.
Police Investigation Launched
In response to the incident, police have initiated an inquest docket to investigate the circumstances surrounding the drownings.
Eyewitness Accounts and Rescue Efforts
Craig Lambinon, spokesperson for the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), provided details on the events leading up to the tragedy.
Eyewitnesses reported that both a male and female were caught in rip currents.
Lifeguards from Simunye Lifeguard Services, along with authorities from the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, NSRI Shelly Beach rescue swimmers, and emergency medical services, responded promptly to the scene.
A Good Samaritan, whose identity remains unknown, bravely entered the water and managed to rescue the adult female, bringing her back to shore.
However, he attempted to return to save the man but was forced to retreat due to rough seas caused by the Spring high tide.
Fortunately, he was not injured and has been commended for his courageous efforts.
Ongoing Search Operations
While lifeguards continued their search for the missing man, they also attempted CPR on the woman who had been rescued. Sadly, she was later declared dead at the scene.
The NSRI and local authorities are committed to finding the missing man and ensuring safety in the area.
As this situation unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by strong currents and changing tides at popular swimming spots.
