As the festive season approaches, the Limpopo Department of Transport has implemented a temporary measure allowing motorists to pass through toll gates without payment to alleviate growing traffic congestion.

This initiative aims to ensure smoother travel for those heading to holiday destinations.

Addressing Traffic Surge

With an anticipated surge in holiday travel, the department is taking proactive steps to manage traffic flow.

Simon Kekana, Deputy Director of the department, noted that opening toll gates for free has significantly reduced long queues.

“This morning, we saw a notable increase in traffic, with over 1,700 vehicles passing through during peak hours,” Kekana explained.

The decision to allow free passage is particularly important as many families prepare for road trips, and the department seeks to minimize delays and enhance safety on the roads.

Safety Concerns Amid Rainy Weather

While easing toll fees is a welcome relief for travellers, Kekana cautioned motorists to remain vigilant, especially with rainy weather affecting parts of the province.

“The current conditions are not favourable, so we urge drivers to be responsible and cautious,” he advised.

He emphasized that reckless driving could lead to accidents and further delays.

A Seasonal Strategy for Smooth Travel

This temporary toll waiver comes as Limpopo braces for increased traffic during the holiday season.

The department’s strategy reflects an understanding of the unique challenges posed by high volumes of road users during this time of year.

By facilitating free passage at toll gates, Limpopo authorities are prioritizing both efficiency and safety as families embark on their festive journeys.

Motorists are encouraged to stay informed about road conditions and adhere to safety regulations to ensure a smooth travel experience.

Commitment to Safe and Efficient Travel

The Limpopo Department of Transport’s decision to open toll gates without payment underscores its commitment to managing traffic effectively during peak travel periods.

As South Africans prepare for the holidays, this initiative aims to create a safer and more enjoyable journey for all road users.

Motorists are reminded to drive responsibly and remain patient as they navigate their routes this festive season.
