Zimbabwe’s opposition party, the Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU) has lambasted the government following their recent review of passport fees.
According to the party’s press statement dated 14 April 2021, the new fees “can be categorically equated to gross human violations” s they are arguing that they are way beyond the reach of many Zimbabweans.
The new passport fees which were announced require one to party ways with US$318 to get a one day passport otherwise one will need to pay US$200 to get a passport in three days. Travel document was pegged at US$80 whilst an ordinary passport requires US$60 to get it.
According to the party’s statement, Zimbabwe’s passport fees are “arguably the highest in the SADC region, with the Republic of South Africa ordinary passport costing half of what the Zimbabwean ordinary passport now costs.“
The party also said it was clear that the “self-imposed exchange rate is not working and economic reality has finally struck.
